Central Dalmatia
Central Dalmatia, one of the oldest regions in Croatia, well known for its great nature and beautiful landscapes. It is first mentioned in the year eight BC when it was founded by the Roman emperor Augustus as a name for the area between Promina and Cetina inhabited by the Illyrian tribe Dalmatians.
Dalmatia is located in the south of Croatia, separated into 4 counties, central Dalmatia consists 2 of them, Sibensko-kninska and Splitsko-dalmatinska county.
Split is the second biggest city of Croatia,but also the economic, political,cultural, educational and transportation center of the region.
In front of Split are the largest islands of Dalmatia like: Šolta,Hvar,Čiovo,Brač and Vis.All of them are connected with Split by ferry connection and from Split by highway you can get to historical towns of Dalmatia:Trogir,Omiš and Makarska.
In Split Roman emperor Diocletian has built the Palace of Diocletian, because he was amazed by its nature and sea.This is one of the world's most beautiful palaces, and around this magnificent building, the city of Split developed.The most important cultural monument is the Trogir Cathedral, and in addition to its monuments, there are also interesting cultural and historical monuments and the narrow streets of Trogir,as well as an art museum with numerous masterpieces.
Between Makarska and Split is a small town Omiš, surrounded by its gorges in the canyon of the river Cetina. Omis is a place of many tourist facilities, in past it was famous by pirates and today it is enriched by popular sports such as rafting on the river Cetina, free climbing, windsurfing, swimming and water polo.It has many picturesque beaches and preserved fishing villages.
If you are a more nature person, then Makarska is a great place for you, Makarska is placed between two peninsulas,St.Peter and Osejava.If you like relaxing summer then swimming in the azure blue sea whose color and purity relaxes the body and soul can give you all you need,but if you are a more active person there is still a great option for you too, Biokovo mountain (nature park) has great terrain for hitchhiking. Makarska has beautiful hotels ,beaches and the most famous beaches of Makarska Riviera are in Tučepi Brela.
Except these beaches,it is a very famous and attractive beach Zlatni rat on the island of Brač.On island Brač you can find more historical monuments and untouched nature, especially in the oldest town Bol which is also most famous seaside resorts at the Adriatic.
The sunniest Croatia island,Hvar with 2718 hours of sunshine per year, in recent years it has also become the world's top island destination. Located in central Dalmatia, between the island of Brač and the island of Korčula,Hvar is a combination of lavender, which is traditionally grown, the blue of the Adriatic Sea, which surrounds it and the abundance of sun, which makes it an attractive tourist destination in central Dalmatia throughout the year.
On the same path, you can get to the Dalmatian hinterland, so-called “Dalmatinska Zagora”. In this part of the Dalmatia, there are cities: Sinj, Imotski, and Vrgorac.
The town of Sinj with a population of just over 11 thousand, and is widely known for the Sinj Alka and it is a trademark of the city. But Sinj is actually much more than the Alka held once a year.
History tells that In that battle, 500 soldiers from this region repelled an attack of 60 000 Turkish soldiers.
The town of Imotski has two pearls of nature: Red and Blue Lake. Blue Lake becomes a bathing area in summer. The bathers descend all the way to the lake and the beach along the arranged serpentine.
We can’t finish without telling about Central Dalmatia’s superior culinary. In many restaurants and taverns, you can enjoy various kinds of fish being cooked on a grill, stew or boiled fish, clams, crabs, Dalmatian smoked ham, and Dalmatian specialty meat - beef stew with dumplings. In the end, you need to taste a glass of white or red wine.
